Our Programs
JASEB Senior Center
Located at 1710 Carleton Street in Berkeley within the Berkeley Methodist United Church, a variety of recreational and educational classes are offered to seniors in the morning and early afternoon Monday through Thursday. Each day at 11:30 am the seniors come together for a nutritious Japanese lunch. Home-delivered lunches are available to the homebound living in the surrounding community.
Pilot Transportation Program
Our Pilot Transportation Program began in March of 2010 and has been steadily growing ever since. The program is designed to bring seniors who can no longer drive long distances to the Senior Center for lunch and to a local Nikkei market for groceries. We have been able to bring seniors to Senior Center Programming as well, including our monthly lecture series and exercise classes.
There is no fee at this time for transportation service due to a recent grant from The Bernice M. Hemphill Trust.
We plan to implement a fee structure in the fall, so stay tuned for updates.
Friendly Visitor and Friendly Caller Programs
Our Friendly Visitor Program serves to connect volunteers with seniors in their homes, it is one of the many ways that we are helping seniors age in place.
Friendly Caller volunteers call a homebound senior a couple of times a week to check-in on their welfare and safety.
Friendly Visitor volunteers visit a senior’s home once a week to develop and maintain a friendly relationship.
The schedule for both positions is flexible and can be arranged on an individual basis.
JASEB will provide a one-time training session for both volunteer positions.

Case Managers
Bi-lingual case managers provide information and assistance to seniors and their families. When called upon, case managers assist families in developing a careplan for the senior and identifying appropriate resources. Case managers also provide caregiver support and assistance.
Eden Issei Terrace
JASEB is a co-sponsor in this apartment complex. HUD subsidizes the rent for the low-income seniors living at Eden Issei Terrace, allowing each to pay one third of their income as rent.
